Resumen:The main advantage offered by the use of corpora to translators — and other language users and researchers, for that matter — is that it enables them to see the paradigm through instances of actual language use, i.e. to see the paradigm as something that emerges naturally from use, not as an abstract entity fossilized in grammars and dictionaries. Even more than that, corpus compilation and analysis often shows that sorne statements contained in grarnmars and dictionaries do not (wholly) agree with the data. From the point of view of translation practice and translator training, it would obviously be of great help to have access to bilingual parallel corpora and corpus-based bilingual dictionaries; still, although these resources are not readily available yet, translators can benefit a great deal frorn source language rnonolingual corpora, since through them they are able to discover patterns and cornponents of meaning which would rernain hidden otherwise. A case in point is that of semantic preference and semantic prosody, both of them variables of extended units of rneaning that seldom find their way into reference works, precisely because these focus on isolated words rather than the patterns into which words enter as part of extended units of meaning.
If we accept that corpus use demonstrates the dynamic nature of rneaning, then, when put to cross-linguistic purposes, it is not only a rnost valuable tool for the translator, but also a way of highlighting the dynamic nature of translation equivalence. [Source: Author]

Resumen:In this article, it is assumed that phraseological usage can be regarded as an indicator of normalisation in translated texts, as phraseological units are target-language standardised forms belonging to its lexical repertoire. Drawing on data yielded by the English-Catalan subcorpus of COVALT (Valencian Corpus of Translated Literature), it was found that Catalan translated texts are less phraseological than their corresponding English source texts, though only by a narrow margin. The narrowness of the margin seems to bear witness to some effort on the translators' part to retain or recreate a noticeable degree of phraseological activity in translated texts. However, further research is needed into the motives underlying translator behaviour in this respect. [Source: Author]

Resumen:The so-called explicitation hypothesis was first formulated by Blum-Kulka (1986) and later put forward as a possible translation universal by corpus-based translation scholars. Even though it has given rise to a considerable body of literature, the notion is far from unproblematic as regards definition, nature of the findings and reasons underlying explicitating techniques. After providing a brief overview of the kinds of problems just mentioned, the present article attempts to determine to what extent explicitating techniques are used in the English–Catalan sub-corpus of the COVALT corpus with regard to a specific cohesive device, the substituting pronoun one(s). A number of translation techniques for dealing with the substituting pronoun are first identified and then arranged on the explicitation–implicitation scale. The results of the quantitative analysis provide evidence of explicitation, as explicitating techniques account for 17.89% of the total number of segment pairs where either explicitating or neutral techniques have been used. A qualitative analysis suggests that explicitating techniques tend to occur when clarity or even intelligibility are at stake. In line with previous research, the present study indicates that explicitation is used to make reference more unambiguous and to avoid repetition through the use of synonyms, both features making for more readable target texts. Resumen:This study explores marked collocation in translated text in the COVALT corpus and relates the facts and patterns observed to properties of translation. Data have been drawn from a comparable and parallel corpus: English source texts, their corresponding Catalan translations, and texts originally written in Catalan. Its method unfolds in three steps: a quantitative and a qualitative cluster analysis and a manual analysis of concordances. Results for the second and third steps suggest that source text interference is an important factor at play, even though it is not the only one. An important conclusion that emerges from the study at different levels is that markedness is a matter of degree, not kind. [Source: Author]

Resumen:This article starts from a twofold distinction: that between corpora as documentation tools and corpora as a source of materials for the translation classroom, and that between corpus-based and corpus-driven approaches. Then a pedagogic framework for translator training is outlined in which the notion of objective is central and a task-based methodology is used. Within such a framework, four kinds of corpus-related tasks are presented and illustrated: cloze tests based on a bilingual corpus, multiple choice exercises based on a learner corpus, translation of short passages yielded by the concordancer and concordance analysis. The first three are corpus-based, whereas the last one is more corpus-driven and can be used to promote autonomous learning and discovery strategies. [Source: Author]

Resumen:After highlighting the affinities between Descriptive Translation Studies and Corpus-based Translation Studies, this paper aims to examine five verbs denoting bodily expression which occur frequently in English fiction (frown, gasp, shrug, sniff and stare) and how they fare in Catalan translation. The analysis is based on COVALT (Valencian Corpus of Translated Literature), a multilingual corpus (still under construction) made up of the translations into Catalan of narrative works originally written in English, French and German published in the autonomous region of Valencia from 1990 to 2000. This analysis has been partly carried out by means of a bilingual concordancer (AlfraCOVALT) developed by the COVALT research group. Results show that, although Catalan translators tend to use the standard equivalents provided by the bilingual dictionary (mainly consisting in more or less fixed collocations, and variations on those collocations), evidence is found of other, diverging tendencies such as explicitation (most conspicuous in query matches for frown) and simplification (in the translation of stare, above all). This - although in varying degrees - bears witness to translators' versatility and creativity. [Source: Author]
